NEET PG is an abbreviated term for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Post graduation. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) conducts this exam annually for doctors with an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) degree who want to pursue further specialization courses. The candidates get to choose the postgraduate specialization on the rank they get based on their scores.
The first announcement by NBEMS said the exam would be conducted on March 3rd, 2024. On January 10th they announced the postponement of the exam to July 7th, 2024. This wasn’t comforting for all the candidates amid their final few revisions.
In March, once again the date was revised to June 23rd, 2024. The doctors made peace with the exam being earlier but a shocking occurrence ignited the rage among the candidates. On June 22, about 12 hours before the exam it was cancelled and said to be rescheduled by NBEMS. The circular released by NBEMS said it was done as a “precautionary measure”. It was obvious that this had been done to ensure the integrity of such an important competitive exam amidst the NEET UG paper scandal investigation. The months of preparation and efforts of these doctors till the last day were felt to be in vain.
The candidates simply waited in anxiety for a date to be announced for about 10 days. Finally, a circular by NBEMS dated 05.07.2024 announced the exam to be conducted on 11th August 2024.
The announcement of the exam date has finally breathed a relief for the applicants to start their preparation with a renewed study plan and strategy. This exam is a critical turning point in the career of the budding young doctors of India.
