Intravenous (IV) administration is one of the most efficient routes for delivering drugs that require immediate action. In hospitals, especially when patients are admitted in critical condition, medications are often administered intravenously. IV cannulas are used to deliver these medications or IV fluids directly into the bloodstream. The size of the cannula can vary depending on whether the patient is a normal adult, a pregnant woman, or an infant, ensuring appropriate and safe delivery of the treatment.

While IV cannulation is generally safe and complications are rare, a recent incident at Mhow Civil Hospital highlighted a tragic exception. On Friday evening, a patient who had been administered IV fluids suddenly began experiencing severe shivering and restlessness, which led to his untimely death. This alarming event caused widespread panic throughout the hospital.

The patient, Dharmendra Kurti, was admitted to the hospital with complaints of high fever. Around 3 p.m. on Friday, he was administered normal saline (NS) through an IV drip. Shortly thereafter, his uncle noticed that Dharmendra was shivering uncontrollably and becoming increasingly restless. The nurses were immediately alerted, and upon checking, they found that his pulse was rapidly declining. Despite their best efforts to stabilize him, Dharmendra tragically passed away before any significant intervention could be made.

I alerted the hospital staff when Dharmendra started shivering and reported restlessness. They found his pulse rate falling rapidly.

The situation escalated as six other patients, who had also received the same batch of normal saline, became aware of Dharmendra's death. Fearing for their own safety, they and their families hurriedly left the hospital without completing the necessary discharge procedure.

Shivering of patients after receiving saline is a significant concern. An autopsy will be conducted to determine cause of death, and the IV kits used will be sent for examination

SDM Charanjit Singh Hooda

In response to this incident, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Charanjit Singh Hooda and Naib Tehsildar Radhavallabh Dhakad initiated an investigation. Given that severe shivering after receiving normal saline is an unusual and severe complication, they ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Additionally, the IV kits used on the patients were sent for thorough examination to ensure there were no contaminants or other issues that could have contributed to this tragic outcome.
