However, men in the US have found a unique way to increase their height by a couple of inches - a Leg-lengthening surgery. That's right! Men are willing to perform an entire surgery costing thousands of dollars to add a couple of inches to their heights.
Limb-lengthening surgery is a surgical procedure that makes an arm or a leg bone longer. It is normally used to treat a disease called skeletal dysplasia. Skeletal dysplasia is a rare genetic disorder that causes abnormal growth and development of a child's bones and joints.
However, what started as surgery to treat a disease, quickly turned into surgery to increase height. The surgery has quickly gained popularity among men in the US in the last five years. But why only men? Dr. Shahab Mahboubian, Surgeon at the Height Lengthening Institute in Burbank, California, has the answer.
Men simply have an inferior complex about their height. Dr. Mahboubian says that he has many male patients who are tired of listening to the 'short height' jokes. He says that he has got patients even 60-65 years of age, who want to increase their heights. Dr. Mahboubian says that he did 20 surgeries three years ago. However, this year, he expects more than 50.
The International Centre for Limb Lengthening has described the surgical procedure. The bone is divided into two different segments, and an orthopaedic lengthening device is inserted into the bone. The external fixators are also placed outside the limb. The bones begin the healing process, and this period is called the 'latency period.'
The patient adjusts the orthopaedic device so that the bone segments pull each other apart slowly. The process of separating the two bones is called 'distraction.' The patients who underwent the surgery are oriented about how to use their limb-lengthening device.
