A woman suffered third-degree burn injuries after a hot water bottle she tucked in her bottoms to alleviate period pain burst onto her lap.
A 33-year-old woman named Jade Parsons-Mayle, suffered burn injuries after a hot water bottle burst in her lap. Jade depends on a hot water bottle to relieve period pain. She tucked the hot water bottle in her bottoms to feel warm and relieve the period pain. But, a few minutes later, the hot water bottle burst, and hot water spilled onto her stomach, legs, groin, genitals, and buttocks. The hot water bottle burst despite being within the use-by date.
She collapsed on the kitchen floor and was immediately taken to the hospital. She was treated in a burns unit. The doctor performed skin graft surgery on her. She was bound to a wheelchair for over a month. Her wounds healed but left with serious scars for life.
Jade says that due to the burn injuries she was not able to walk for over a month. The hot water ruptured her legs and groin area. The doctors performed skin grafting surgeries twice. To heal the burns she had to use the wheelchair. She said that it was difficult to sleep as it was itchy and the smell was unbearable. She suffered first, second, and third-degree burns on different areas of her body. She was not permitted to walk after the skin graft Surgery and she was in a wheelchair.
People use hot water bottles to ease pain, comfort, and feel warm and it also helps to feel relaxed and sleep. According to the doctors, the hot water bottles have an expiry date. The hot water bottle rubber degenerates over time and it can lead to breakage. They should be properly checked for any mark of weathering before use, particularly if the bottle is two years old.
Instructions should be followed while using the hot water bottles such as:-
1. Follow the manufacturer's instructions while using the hot water bottle
2. Do not store hot water in rubber bottles
3. To evade the risk of burst only fill a quarter of the bottle
4. Check the expiry dates of the bottle
5. Check for any weathering of the bottle
6. Do not sit on the bottle
7. Keep children away from the hot water bottles
8. To elude direct contact with skin wrap the hot water with a towel
9. Do not use an electric hot water bottle while sleeping
10. Do not fill the bottle up to the margin
11. Do not take the hot water bottle to bed
12. Do not use overheated water in the hot water bottle it can result in bursting
13. Sometimes the rubber that is used for the bottles can cause allergic reactions.
