Delhi's Yamuna River is once again enveloped in a dense layer of toxic foam, containing harmful pollutants like ammonia and phosphates. Despite the high levels of pollutants and untreated sewage that are thought to be harmful, people continue to be unconcerned about the frothy, toxic water during the Chhath Puja celebrations in the national capital. Footage of a woman using contaminated Yamuna River water for hair washing has gone viral. Alongside her, other devotees were also seen taking a dip in the water as part of the Chhath Puja rituals.

A disturbing video captures a saree-clad woman standing in knee-deep water, seemingly unfazed as she uses the toxic foam as shampoo to wash her hair. Surrounding her, others continue their bathing ritual, oblivious to the hazardous conditions, highlighting a stark disregard for health and safety amidst the polluted waters. It seems they are enjoying themselves, sharing laughs and jokes while in the tainted river water. The video, which has garnered over 1 million views, received a wave of comments from viewers who were taken aback by the woman's actions.

"It’s truly disheartening to witness."

"Is this really happening?" questioned one astonished user, while another remarked, "That foam definitely isn't shampoo!

"I'm repeating myself: basic education is essential for everyone. Just look at how this aunty is washing her hair, thinking that foam is shampoo!!" the caption of the video stated.

Similar videos depict groups of women washing their hair with the foamy water, leaving the internet in disbelief. "One commenter sarcastically noted the absurdity of attributing spiritual significance to this hazardous practice."

A worried user pointed out the dangers of exposing skin and hair to toxic chemicals, stating, "In a few days, they'll be visiting a skin doctor."

Delhi High Court refused permission

On Wednesday, the Delhi High Court turned down the request for rituals along the Yamuna due to the river's severe pollution levels, which present serious health hazards. The court stated that cleaning the river before the event would not be feasible.

Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Gedela cautioned that exposure to the polluted Yamuna River will inevitably lead to illness. We cannot allow you (devotees) to go into the water. It is extremely polluted. This is a massive undertaking, and it cannot be accomplished at this moment. We cannot clean the Yamuna in a single day."
