In a first-of-its-kind development, a European lesbian couple has become the first in Europe and second in the world to have a baby they both carried. The wonder baby, named Derek Eloy, was welcomed on October 30 in Palma, Majorca, Spain to proud parents, 30-year-old Estefania and 27-year-old Azahara. Azhara carried her son for nine months, while the egg that produced Derek was fertilized in Estefania’s womb.

Distinctively, the couple started their journey to parenthood in March, seeking assistance at a fertility clinic. The groundbreaking fertility treatment called INVOcell began with placing a capsule of eggs and sperm into Estefania's vagina. It was left in place for five days to allow natural in vivo fertilization. The embryos were then examined and selected before being transferred into Azahara's uterus for further development.

A doctor from the team that made Derek's birth possible stated, ''The novelty in this process is that both could carry the embryo and share it for as long as needed.''

While speaking with the local media, Estefania said, ''Now, I look at him, my partner and I look at each other, and we feel that it's something that has been within both of us, something we've done together.''

She also added that it was a way for both of them to be able to carry a baby. The idea that she could participate this way and carry a baby in her womb was much more exciting.

In 2019, a British couple, Donna and Jasmine Francis-Smith, became the first in the world to carry the same baby. Fertility specialist Dr. Kathy Doody and her husband, Dr. Kevin Doody, of CARE Fertility in Bedford, Texas, were the first to try reciprocal effortless in vitro fertilization using radical technology, which gave the couple a shot at motherhood.
