The event was aimed at giving an overview of the disease and the current status of India in its fight against TB.
The event was hosted by Medical Education Cell. Gauri Agarwal, the Program Coordinator of the Medical Education cell, opened the session by introducing the panelists. Medical Education Cell Director Dr. Arti Nehra, Medical Lead Dr. Darshit Patel, and teaching assistant Dr. Munmun Rai were present from MedBound. The event was hosted by Miss. Gauri with Dr. Aarti Nehra and Dr. Darshit Patel as co-hosts. The expert panel included Dr. Gurmeet Kaur (Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi), Dr. Areez Khoja ( Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital, Delhi), and Dr. Malhar Mone( MBBS, Pune). The session started with a quick introduction to the program by Dr. Gayathri Menon, representing the academic dept of TSMU. The first talk on Tuberculosis by Dr. Darshit Patel gave an insight into the historical importance of Tuberculosis (TB) from a global perspective.
Further, presentations on the problem statement of the disease, medical definitions, pathogenetic mechanisms, and diagnosis and management methods were extensively discussed by Dr. Malhar Mone and Dr. Gurmeet Kaur. The talks revealed the fact that although the disease burden has been on the decline elsewhere in the world, it is still a burning issue in India and especially in its northern parts. Dr. Malhar Mone also threw light upon the various government-initiated programs against TB.
In the next session, Dr. Areez Khoja conducted an interactive learning session on a real case-based approach to a patient with TB. He helped participants look through the point of view of a consultant who is the first contact of a probable TB patient. The session involved Dr. Areez guiding the participants step-by-step through the differentials and decision-making process of diagnosing and managing a case of Tuberculosis. Slides on clinical x-rays were also discussed.
After the presentation session came to an end, student feedback was encouraged and some students came up with positive responses. A final-year medical student remarked that she could now identify a TB x-ray with ease, having not seen a real TB case till now. Dr. Aarti Nehra added that recent government initiatives are on their way and commented on the need for better standardization of TB drugs in the country.
The panel came to the decision to conduct further Clinical Case Discussion sessions for students and encouraged the participants to attend the post-session quiz to be conducted later.
Dr. Munmun gave the vote of thanks.
