The multidisciplinary team at AIIMS Bhubaneshwar resected a synovial sarcoma weighing 7 kg from the scalp of a 51-year-old in a 10-hour-long surgery.
According to sources, Rabindra Bisui, a 51-year-old man hailing from West Bengal, had been living with a tumor diagnosed as synovial sarcoma for 25 years. Initially small in size, the tumor underwent rapid growth within 7 months, hindering the patient’s movements and daily activities. The patient had unsuccessfully visited multiple healthcare facilities before seeking treatment at the Department of Plastic Surgery at AIIMS Bhubaneshwar.
The rare synovial sarcoma, known to be aggressive weighed an enormous 7 kilograms, situated in the scalp region. A multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Sanjay Kumar Giri, the Head of the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery at AIIMS Bhubaneshwar, was formed to tackle this challenging surgery. The team comprised various disciplines, such as surgical oncology, neurosurgery, interventional radiology, and anesthesia.
The surgical procedure, which spanned over 7 hours, involved embolization of the bilateral superficial temporal artery and the left occipital artery by the radiodiagnosis department, following which the tumor was resected by neurosurgeons and surgical oncologists, with no damage to the skull bone and handed over to plastic surgeons.
According to sources, Ashutosh Biswas, executive director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, spoke about the incident, noting the complete resection of the cancerous growth and the absence of postoperative complications. He also emphasized the commitment of the institute to providing quality healthcare to the people.
The patient was kept under 24-hour intensive care post-surgery and later transferred to the hospital ward for further observation. He expressed gratitude towards his doctors, deeming them as his divine saviors.
