In a landmark medical achievement, doctors at Kamineni Hospital in LB Nagar, Hyderabad, have successfully performed the first-ever heart transplant on a polio survivor. The recipient, Bhaskar, a 45-year-old tailor from the Khammam district of Telangana, had been battling severe heart disease, exacerbated over the past three years by his partial polio condition.

Bhaskar's Struggle and the Need for a Transplant

Bhaskar's heart disease led to irregular heartbeats and an insufficient blood supply, resulting in a host of health complications. As his condition worsened, the necessity for a heart transplant became undeniable. The hospital, in a statement released on May 29, highlighted the critical nature of his condition, which had rendered him bedridden and severely fatigued.

The Groundbreaking Surgery

The complex and delicate procedure took five hours to complete. It involved the removal of Bhaskar’s failing heart and the implantation of a new one donated by a brain-dead individual. This intricate surgery required the precise reconnection of all blood vessels and valves, underscoring the advanced medical capabilities at Kamineni Hospital.

Dr. Vishal V. Khante, Head of the Heart Transplant Department and Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, and Dr. Rajesh Deshmukh, Consultant Heart Transplant and Cardiothoracic Surgeon led the transplant team. Their expertise and meticulous planning were pivotal in successfully executing the surgery.

Post-Surgery Recovery and Monitoring

Following the successful surgery, Dr. Khante commented on Bhaskar’s promising recovery. "Bhaskar is gradually regaining his ability to engage in daily activities. Previously confined to bed due to extreme fatigue, he can now walk significant distances and looks forward to resuming his normal life," Dr. Khante stated. However, he also emphasized the need for ongoing intensive monitoring and medication to prevent organ rejection, noting that the medical team is vigilantly overseeing Bhaskar’s condition.

A Testament to Medical Excellence

Dr. Gayatri Kamineni, COO of Kamineni Hospitals, expressed immense pride in the hospital’s achievement. "This successful surgery not only demonstrates the medical prowess of our institution but also signifies a new lease on life for Bhaskar. I extend my gratitude to all the doctors involved, including Dr. Vishal Khante, Dr. Rajesh Deshmukh, Dr. Suresh Kumar Esampalli, Chief Cardiac Anaesthetist, and Dr. Ravali Sade, Consultant Anaesthetist, along with the dedicated ICU staff and nursing team," she remarked.

Bhaskar's New Lease on Life

Expressing his heartfelt gratitude, Bhaskar credited the skilled team at Kamineni Hospital for saving his life. "Without their expertise and dedication, I wouldn’t have survived this ordeal. I am following the prescribed medical regimen and attending regular consultations to ensure my continued recovery," he said.

This pioneering heart transplant on a polio survivor marks a significant milestone in Indian medical history, highlighting the advanced healthcare capabilities available at Kamineni Hospital and offering hope to countless patients facing similar challenges.
